When I was in elementary school, I decided to act on my ridiculous obsession with animals and began volunteering at a local no kill shelter in my hometown. My love affair with animal shelters only blossomed from there! Austin Pets Alive is a shelter that removes animals from the euthanasia list and gives them a comfortable place to live while searching for their forever home! Since 2008, more than 25,000 dogs and cats have been saved!! This includes baby kittens that need to be fed from a bottle, sick animals that need lots of medical attention, or just any abandoned pet. Longhorn Pets Alive is an organization here at UT that helps make it easier for students to help APA’s cause! We host profit shares, bake sales, and even a 6th street water bottle sale all to raise funds to donate directly to Austin Pets Alive. We have also made dog and cat toys at meetings to donate, we frequently organize group volunteering sessions, and organize on-campus orientations so students can easily get set up to volunteer.
Last year I was LPA secretary (and sent out some awesome GIFs in the weekly emails), and this year I am honored to be a Co-President of the organization! I was just recently able to host my first event, the Valentine’s Day Puppy Kissing Booth and bake sale, where we had people from the community bring their pets and hosted a few Austin Pets Alive adoptable dogs as well! So many Kappa Deltas came to support the event, and it was such a blast to have them there with me goofing around with the pups. It was such a great event to host because I got to spend my day surrounded by the cutest dogs, and it was so exciting to see so many people care so much about a cause so close to my heart!
But what has been one of the most amazing parts of this experience is the support I’ve received from my sisters! A few Kappa Deltas have joined the club and even become officers!! KD has given me so much encouragement and support in this and in everything else I do. I’m so incredibly thankful to have loving and supportive girls surrounding me and helping an organization that is so important to me and our community!
Gabriela is a sophomore from PC15 majoring in Graphic Design. She’s even won a contest for her water color paintings!! (you can call her Pam Beasley) When she’s not making crazy cool art, she’s probably petting puppies and kittens. She’s allergic to them, but nothing can stop this chick!!
